The Henrico County – Department of Public Utilities Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) went into service in 1989. Over the years, the facility has been upgraded and expanded several times. Today, the WRF is a 75 MGD design flow, advanced wastewater treatment facility utilizing enhanced nutrient removal treatment technology to make the dirty water very clean and return it to the James River. On a daily average basis, the WRF treats 40 MGD, generates approximately 110 wet tons of Class B Biosolids for land application and produces approximately 500,000 cubic feet of gas through our anaerobic (solids) digestion process. The WRF has 75 employees and is home to the County’s Central Environmental Laboratory (a full service and VELAP Certified lab) and our Monitoring and Compliance Section who manages the County’s Industrial Waste Pretreatment Program and other environmental-related support programs. The WRF also employs a team of operators, mechanics, electricians, instrumentation specialists, engineers, managers, and administrative staff. The annual operating budget is approximately $20 M and we manage and maintain over $500 M in assets. The WRF and staff have received many awards for our performance and commitment to excellence over the years.
