Dr. Ian Pepper will provide an update on the National Collaborative PFAS Project, coordinated by the University of Arizona’s WEST Center, designed to evaluate the incidence and mobility of PFAS in soils with a history of land application of biosolids.
 
The project has already established a national network of land application plots where soil PFAS concentrations are now known.  (Read the Preliminary Report on the National Collaborative PFAS Project.) An attractive concept is to establish a similar national network of plant uptake data across the country by analyzing PFAS in crops grown on the land application plots already studied. By growing crops on these sites, plant uptake of PFAS can be evaluated on a variety of soil types under differing climate regimes.
The undertaking of Phase 1 of the national study evaluating incidence of PFAS at land application sites was a massive undertaking. A Phase 2, plant uptake study nationally would also be a massive undertaking, and would require additional funding.
